Why This English Release Of A Mainline ‘Super Robot Wars’ Game Is Such A Big Deal

Forbes – June 6, 2016 – For someone that has been playing the Super Robot Warsgames since 1991, one of the biggest issues the series has faced is that its use of disparate mecha anime licenses has limited its Western release. Bandai Namco has finally found a workaround to this situation and that is utterly momentous for gaming and mecha anime as a whole.

Super Robot Wars is a series of turn-based strategy games that pools mecha from various anime over the past half century. The best way to think of that is a mecha themed Avengers coupled with amazing battle animations and based around the basic framework of chess.

It is these anime licenses that have been problematic outside of Japan and this Asian release of Super Robot Wars V, as well as its subsequent English localization, brilliantly sidesteps this global licensing issue entirely.

This is because modern consoles are region free and what with the advent of online shopping means that importing games couldn’t be easier. Therefore, while Super Robot Wars V will be released in Asia, importing it will be no different than if you were buying something on Amazon.

Super Robot Wars V is also going back to the roots of the series, as the lineup involved is broadly similar to the original GameBoy game. To explain, the first Super Robot Wars only featured three main series GundamMazingerand Getter Robo.
